Sea Salt

The term sea salt is not very specific. It can mean any salt from the sea, whether it is industrial, refined etc. Buyer beware! All sea salts are not equal. It is important to seek out more specific information. unrefined natural sea salts  (INFO) are much better for health than refined industrial sea salt!

Sal Tradicional, Traditional Sea Salt

Natural, hand-harvested, unrefined artisan sea salt from Algarve, Portugal is referred to as Sal Tradicional or Traditional Sea Salt which is completely different in nutritional quality and taste than industrial refined sea salt. Fleur de Sel, Flor de Sal, Flos Salis  (Other Names: Flower of Salt)

Fleur de Sel or Flor de Sal or Flos de Salis (flower of salt) are the most prized gourmet salts. These beautiful sea salts crystallize only during the warm months of the year on the surface of salt evaporation ponds and is gently hand-collected mostly by women "paludiers" or "marnotos" (salt farmers).  Marisol's High Quality Flor de Sal (Portuguese for Fleur de Sel) and Flos Salis (Ancient Roman for Fleur de Sel) comes from the Algarve region of Portugal. Organic Sea Salt

There is some controversy about calling salt Organic. It cannot be " certified organically grown " as that term is reserved for products from living organisms (ie plants).

Portuguese Salt, Portuguese Sea Salt, Algarve Sea Salt

The term Portuguese salt or Portuguese sea salt alone is not very specific. Portuguese salt or Portuguese sea salt can mean any salt from Portugal, including industrial or refined! It is best to seek out more specific information as to the processing methods and certification. Unrefined natural Traditional sea salt and Flor de Sal are much better for health than refined sea salt!

Celtic Salt   (aka: traditional sea salt, sal tradicional)

Natural, hand-harvested, unrefined artisan sea salt is commonly referred to as "Celtic" salt in North America regardless of the brand name. Simply put, the adjective "celtic" (as in Celtic culture) describes hand-harvested, organically hand-produced artisan salts from ancient traditional salt flats such as the traditional salt flats of Algarve, Portugal. These traditional hand harvested salts are completely different in nutritional quality and taste than industrial machine harvested refined sea salt. Since at least as early as 1990, the natural foods trade in Canada has been using the term celtic salt to describe unrefined natural sea salts such as those traditionally hand-harvested and organically produced by artisan salt farmers in the age-old traditional celtic manner developed by celtic peoples. The same traditional sea salt harvesting methods are used today by "marnotos" (portuguese paludiers, salt farmers) in the ancient salt flats of the Algarve region of Portugal.

Macrobiotic Sea Salt

Naturally white unrefined Algarve Portuguese sea salt is the type preferred by many followers of macrobiotic teachers such as Georges and Lima Ohsawa. Marisol natural, unprocessed, additive-free, unrefined, hand-harvested, unwashed, macrobiotic sea salt is naturally very white and clean, without any artificial means of whitening or washing, due to the hot summer temperatures in the Algarve region, which result in a much whiter salt than that produced in other colder regions such as France.
